Ambitious Gry Emily Thelander is both founder of the female skater community Grls Untamed and co-creator of the sustainable brand Sky and The Moon designing casual fashion from 100% deadstock. We have talked to the entrepreneur about sustainability, empowerment, and joy from within.
When did your passion for skating begin, and how did it turn into a female community?
I’ve always wanted to be a skater girl actually but never truly believed that it would happen. It turned out that 2020 was the year I found the courage to get on the board. This summer I fell completely in love with a thing called surf skate. It simply raised my energy and made me happy and confident from within. I instantly wanted to share this with other women and made a pact with myself to stop any girl on a board and ask her to join my skate sisterhood. That was the beginning of Grls Untamed, an all-Girl community and sisterhood and as of today we are more than 60 members. The main mission is to empower women through skateboarding and through connecting with each other while moving. I truly believe that learning something new, like skateboarding, in a safe and supporting environment, can help liberate women to conquer their fears and insecurities in life.
How can we get involved?
We have an Instagram account (grlsuntamed) and we also have a group chat for those who wants to connect even more. We meet up twice a week. During fall and winter season it’s a bit more difficult being outside and have a steady turnout, so every Sunday evening we have an all-Girl indoor session at a skatepark. We arrange roadtrips were we explore skate parks around Denmark. Our new website www.grlsuntamed.com is launching soon and here you can read about the community, our mission, gatherings, skate lessons, projects and shop some nice gear.
How do you see this movement developing over time?
The core value of Grls Untamed is that the joy of true sisterhood, movement, laughter and fearlessness elevates and uplift us so that we can uplift others. It is a community for the community. We work towards mentoring, fundraising, supporting organizations and creating awareness around anything that can make our planet a better place. We have some really exiting projects coming up. We’re working on funding and building the most rad surf skate park in Denmark, we’re planning surf-, skate- and yoga retreats for 2021, and much more fun stuff.
Can you tell us a little bit more about the philosophy behind you coming fashion brand Sky and The Moon?
Sky and The Moon is a deadstock only brand. It’s a collaboration between two women living a highly conscious life. It’s a mutual love for Mother Earth and all her living beings, a mutual feeling of a much needed change in the fashion industry and a mutual fondness of high quality clothing and one of a kind pieces that are eco-responsible, artisan produced, and ethically manufactured. We make giving back a big part of our core brand value. We work with certain foundations, women artists, models and creatives to make life as prosperous as possible for us all. We hope to launch at the end of this year.
What do you know now that you wished you had known before starting your own fashion brand?
Me and co-founder Anja Poulsen founded Sky and The Moon in early 2020 during the midst of a new world order. The timing was not ideal. Or so it felt. But it has actually been such a wonderful learning process. A lot of things in life cannot and should not be controlled or pushed and this skill of patience and awaiting has gifted us with the possibility to go deep with our brand. High quality and thoughtful design is sustainable, because you end up with pieces that can be passed on to the next generations.
Is there anything else you’re passionate about at the moment?
I’m very curious and excited about all the shifts that are happening on the planet at this time. New thoughts, ideas, values, and dreams are coming up to the surface and I believe it’s a necessary shift for sure. It’s important for us to understand the impact we have on each other and whether we want to life in love or in fear. Grls Untamed is a good example for this new way. I have met so much love, openness, support, cheering and willpower within the group and so many beautiful women showing up for them self and their inner truth. That is how I want our society and world to be.
Passion; also known as dedication, as hunger, it is the desire to destroy oneself for one’s art. To tear down, move, or start over in order to rebuild and expand. The feeling of not being able to let go. It is a human condition that most are bound by.
Even though we are JUST human, JUST women, JUST female, we all have that drive that makes us ‘more than’. It is what makes us-, our stories-, and our creations unique. From a job, to a child, to a hobby gone wild, we, and you, are more than JUST female. We have gathered some of the most inspiring Danish women that we know for a talk about passion, creativity, and the balance between worklife and homelife.
Let their inspiring stories, trials and errors be a reminder that we all can struggle, we can fail, but something will always have us return to that same place of passion. And maybe the point is not necessarily to succeed, but to have given it your all, and grown in the process.
Tell us about your passion, struggle, and successes!
